Discovering the world of painting has been the most exciting thing to happen to me since my retirement from teaching, and I am so grateful for the early lessons painting flowers and playing with acrylics. Painting has given me new eyes and the world is an infinitely more beautiful place focused through this new lens. My new mantra is "pay attention to what gives you pleasure" and I have found great pleasure covering paper or canvas with layers of watercolour or acrylic paint. It would probably be helpful to spend more time exploring one of these mediums, but I am addicted to both so I continue to explore images in both water colour and acrylics. Maybe this will be the year that I try and use both mediums on the same piece!
At this point in my journey I am experimenting with glazes and veils in my landscapes and trying to get more light into my paintings. Being a harpist has made me appreciate other musicians and one of my goals for this year is to create a series of paintings featuring musicians. I am also a traveller and painting helps me remember the places I have been that touched some chord in my soul. Because I am such a late bloomer, I feel like I am trying to make up for 40 lost years, so that helps me get past all the head messages about not being good enough. I am trying to live in the present, and at this time, I can honestly say painting is bringing me real joy. How lucky am I to be looking forward to the next few years knowing that my brushes and pallet knives are handy and I have a legitimate excuse to go to more live concerts and see more of the spots on my bucket list.
