katherine upton

For many years I concentrated on representational semi-abstract paintings. Two years ago I felt an urge to change - to break out and free myself of the subject in order to play with the paint.
My recent canvases are non-objective abstractions. I always start with a loose plan but once the painting starts, one brushstroke draws me onward to the next. Experimenting with paint leads to unexpected effects - some are worth keeping while others are not. The challenge is to stay open, to allow myself to veer away from the plan, in order to accommodate a new discovery. Thus painting becomes a problem-solving process in which the end is unpredictable. My decisions are based on chance and intuition as much as on principles of design.
Beyond having fun, my goal is to create work that is magical and intriguing.
